Recreation

Englewood Recreation strives to improve the quality of life for our neighbors, both youth and adults, through fitness, work, play, and hands-on learning. Much of the work of Englewood Rec is done at the Commonwealth Apartments Recreation Facility which houses a gymnasium, a fitness balcony and an open-air rooftop hockey deck.

Near East Soccer Alliance

The Near East Soccer Alliance (NESA) is a youth recreational program of Englewood Community Development Corporation (ECDC). NESA was created out of a desire to provide a local and affordable opportunity for all families to participate in soccer on the near east side of Indianapolis. NESA hopes for youth to engage in play, friendship, and competition in healthy and encouraging ways, and that through healthy play, youth and families of different backgrounds can come together.

NESA started as a small, volunteer-run program that has slowly grown year-by-year. NESA now serves about 250 youth and their families each spring and fall season. The youth range in age from 4-14 years old. NESA also has about 50 volunteer coaches each season and provides leadership and job opportunities for several older youth to referee at games.

Nature Playspace and Community Garden

The Englewood Nature Playspace and Gardens is a beloved neighborhood asset, created over the last 15 years by and for neighbors. Throughout these years, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful has been an important partner in helping to develop and maintain our space. The Garden includes raised beds where neighbors can learn how to grow food; it spans three City lots and serves as an outdoor classroom for Daystar Childcare every day of the week.

A respite from the concrete and asphalt that dominates our neighborhood, it is the only public green space within walking distance. The Nature Playspace and Community Garden is open to the community for gatherings, meetings, and play.

Currently, the space contains:

  • Fruit trees
  • Native grasses and flowers
  • Raised garden beds
  • Large sandbox
  • Picnic shelter
  • Natural climbing areas
  • Rolling hill with rock path and pondless waterfall
  • Murals done by community residents and Daystar children
  • Garden shed and compost bins
  • Water and electricity on-site

Hours: Dawn to Dusk. DayStar Childcare always has regular hours they use the space during the week and always have first “dibs” on the space.

CTA: To reserve the shelter, call Englewood Church at 317.639.1541. Please note that the Garden does not have access to restrooms.
